Crash Data Retrieval (CDR)

CDR1Forensic Safety Group's research and testing methodologies combine the use CDR2of classic strategies with current technology to gather and analyze all available information. The firm owns the latest Bosch (formerly Vetronix) Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) system that enables trained staff members to image or “download” and analyze crash data from Event Data Recorders (EDRs) in the vehicle. EDRs are devices which record signals from various vehicle system sensors during events and are sometimes referred to as the vehicle’s "black box.” The capability of EDRs to record information and our ability to image any data stored in these modules varies by vehicle. In some cases, vehicles are capable of capturing both pre-crash and crash data. Some examples of the data that may be stored in an EDR are:

  • Pre-crash vehicle speed, throttle position, brake status
  • Status of occupant’s seatbelt, i.e. buckled or unbuckled
  • Change in vehicle speed during an impact
  • Roll rate of vehicle equipped with rollover sensors
  • Timing of deployment of restraint system components including front, side and curtain airbags and pretensioners
  • Status of occupant position and detection systems
